Maspalomas – a little Sahara desert and the most popular resort in Gran Canaria.

Maspalomas is the largest and most popular resort on the island of Gran Canaria.

It is located in the south of the island, therefore both the air and the water are always slightly warmer here than in the north. For tourists, ideal conditions have been created here – all-inclusive hotel chains, shops, a 12-kilometer beach, restaurants, various children’s entertainment and so on.

There are 2 main resorts: Meloneras and Playa del Inglés.

Meloneras is an elite recreation area. There are many expensive hotels, a beautiful infrastructure with tennis and golf clubs.

At Playa del Ingles, prices are much lower, but in general it is simpler here. Even restaurants overlooking the ocean do not look as presentable as we would like.

However, a fairly decent apart-hotel can be rented here starting from 40 euros per night.

Also, literally 30 minutes drive from Maspalomas there are several other small resorts: Anfi del Mar with Caribbean sand, Puerto Rico with a beach without waves and Puerto de Mogan with Mediterranean architecture. If you decide to stay in Maspalomas, I recommend diversifying your vacation with trips to these places.

A huge disadvantage of a holiday in Maspalomas is also its advantage. Everything here is created for tourists. There is no historical architecture, in fact, there is no urban infrastructure, all restaurants are designed exclusively for tourists, so if you want a non-typical “beach-hotel” vacation, then it is better to go to the north of the island and rent an apartment near Las Canteras beach. And from there you may take day trips to explore the island.

How to get to Maspalomas?

There is a direct bus from Las Palmas and Gran Canaria Airport to Maspalomas. The journey takes about an hour. The bus leaves several times an hour.

Best places to visit in Maspalomas

First of all, these are the famous Maspalomas Dunes. This is a unique natural formation for which Maspalomas is called the Canarian Sahara. Geographically, the island is located opposite the famous desert, from where the sand is blown and brought to Gran Canaria. The area of sand dunes occupies 400 hectares, and due to frequent winds the dunes are in constant motion.

Many people are very fond of the botanical garden and Palmitos park – an amusement park with a dolphinarium, oceanarium, butterfly park, etc. But I recommend walking to the historic lighthouse and meeting the sunset here, it is gorgeous.

Maspalomas Lighthouse is the only historical landmark in Maspalomas. It was built in 1890 and still serves its purpose.
