No matter which way you are choosing, at some point you will need to hop on a ferry. Because there is no such thing as an airport on Koh Phangan. So you won’t be able to get to Phangan by air, which is also an advantage, as fewer tourists decide to spend a vacation on the island due to the long route.

Before you read this article, you have to know, that it can be really simple and cheap to travel around Asia. You can combine all the possible kinds of transport in one route on the website 12GoAsia.

As I mentioned before, the distance between the islands is 12 km, so if you get your flight ticket to Koh Samui, it’s going to be the fastest way to get to Koh Phangan, however, the most expensive one as well, as the flights from Bangkok to Samui cost more than 100 euros one way.

How to get to Koh Phangan from Surat Thani?

Surat Thani airport is the closest airport to the Phangan island on the mainland of Thailand. To get to the island you have to take a bus to Donsac pier and then a ferry to Koh Phangan. The whole trip will take around 4.5 hours and 15 dollars. The easiest way would be to book a 500 bats transfer Bus+ferry. You can do it here.

By the way, Surat Thani airport is an international airport, so there are few direct flights from Surat Thani to other countries, like Malaysia or Singapore.

How to get to Koh Phangan from Bangkok?

By air: Take a flight from Bangkok to Surat Thani (starts with 30 dollars) or Koh Samui. Then follow the instructions above.

Bus + ferry. The cheapest route. Take an overnight bus from Bangkok to Surat Thani. It departs around 6 pm and arrives at Surat Thani the next morning. Then take a bus to Donsak and ferry to Phangan. Press HERE, to check the timetables and to organize the trip.

Train + ferry. The overnight train from Bangkok to Surathani is a bit more expensive than the bus option but way more comfortable. Then again bus to Donsak and ferry to Phangan. Press HERE, to check the timetables and to organize the trip.

Whether you choose the train or the bus option, I would recommend you to book the whole trip together with an agency. We did it online with 12goAsia. And it was really comfortable.
