Cortina d’Ampezzo is the main and most expensive ski resort in the Dolomites. It is a small Alpine-style city, located at an altitude of 1200 meters. There live around 6,000 people.
Cortina d’Ampezzo is located in a heart of Dolomites. So it’s a good base point to stay for 2-3 days and visit the most beautiful attractions in the mountains.
At the summertime the prices are quite affordable, but they increase in winter, when Cortina becomes the center of ski tourism. There are 72 ski trails around. All of them are part of the Dolomiti Superski system – the largest ski area in the world with a single ski pass.
Where to stay in Cortina d’Ampezzo?
We stayed in a very cozy design hotel Fiori Dolomites Experience hotel with fantastic breakfast, cozy furniture and wow-view from the balcony. It cost us around 100 euro per night.
It translates as “Three peaks of Lavaredo” – a mountain range with a height of 2999 meters. Tre cime is one of the symbols of Dolomites, therefore it attracts many tourists all around the world, especially hikers and mountain climbers.
This hike around the peaks was truly amazing. To learn more about this attraction, read my article: Tre Cime di Lavaredo – the most beautiful hike in Dolomites.
It’s one of the most beautiful and easiest to reach lake in the Dolomites. So, of course eventually Braies lake became a victim of overtourism. Therefore everything is overpriced. The boat rental is 19 euros per 30 mins and parking is also expensive.
So if you are passing by this lake as we did, than yes, stop by to make a good photo. But I don’t know if it worths to go there on purpose. The next lake is way more beautiful.
It’s a very beautiful mountain lake with turquoise water and limestone peaks around. The biggest charm of the lake is brought by the fact that it can be reached only by 2 hours hiking from the nearest parking. So, good news. You won’t meet there same crowds as in Lago di Braies.
The hike begins from the car park at Passo Tre Croci. There is free parking by the side of the road or in a small car park near the start of the trail.
The hiking trail itself promises jaw-dropping views over the Dolomites. The round trip to Lago Sorapis and back will take you around 5 hours (13.5 km).
How to get to Lago di Sorapis?
You need to get to Passo Tre Croci, where the hike starts. It’s not very far from Cortina and will take you around 20 minutes driving.
You can also reach this place by bus. Bus N030 runs 4 times a day from Cortina to the trailhead at 1805m Passo Tre Croci.
Unfortunately we didn’t make it there due to the weather conditions, so I attached this photo by anywhereweroam.
After spending time in Cortina d’Ampezzo and its surroundings I highly recommend to move to another beautiful place in Dolomites – Alpe di Siusi. The beautiful mountain valley with a few amazing places for hiking, hotels in cozy chalets and restaurants in mountain hutts.

Wow! This is an amazing informative blog, Julie! And great pictures too. QUESTION: How was your stay at FIORI DOLOMITES EXPERIENCE? Where there good restaurants nearby? My husband is a wine and food lover and so a great dinner is a must. Any recommendations in the area?
Looking forward to your response.
